Court
of Appeals Upholds Choice For Runway
The United
States Court of Appeals in the District of Columbia unanimously upheld the
FAA’s choice to expand the south runway at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood
International Airport. The Court of Appeals agreed with the FAA’s preferred
alternative to expand the south runway over another alternative to build a
parallel north runway.

South Runway Expansion
The PBS&J Team submitted the 30% design plans in August 2010. The
Final Alternative Design Solutions Report was submitted in November, 2010.
This report analyzed five alternative runway designs to find the most
efficient layout with the least impact. Based on the report’s
recommendation, BCAD selected a final design.
This fall, a Selection Committee chose five teams to compete for the
design and construction of the runway structures over Federal Highway and
the Florida East Coast (FEC) Railroad.
The permitting process began in December 2010 with applications
submitted to the South Florida Water Management District, Broward County
Environmental Protection and Growth Management Division and the Army Corps
of Engineers.
Terminal 4 Gate Replacement
PGAL-Zyscovich (PZ) Design Services completed
the Concept (Preliminary) Design in December 2010. BCAD is negotiating a
contract with PZ to prepare the eastern phase’s construction documents.
They currently have a contract for complete design for just the western
phase of the project.
Acquisitions
In November 2009, the County Commission authorized staff to start the
process of acquiring the Hilton Fort Lauderdale Airport Hotel and Dania
Boat Sales. Broward County Real Properties started a title search, a
property assessment, and engaged outside counsel for assistance.

Southwest is the
2nd largest carrier at FLL. In 2010, they carried 3,576,079
passengers, which is 15.9% of the traffic. Southwest began service with five
daily nonstop departures to Tampa on January 21, 1995. Today, Southwest
has 50 daily nonstop flights serving 21 cities throughout the US.

Peter J.
Nolan, Fire Prairie
On January 5,
2011, Florida Wetlands, an exhibition by artist Peter
J. Nolan, opened at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International
Airport. The exhibition, in the Lee Wagener Art Gallery, located in
Terminal 2, on the departure level, will run for three months.
A Floridian from a young age, Peter J. Nolan has worked as a
conservation photographer since 2001. Preferring the time-honored 4x5
wooden field camera, Nolan traverses the South Florida landscape capturing
the interplay of water, land and sky.
“The organic nature of using traditional equipment in the field is
very appealing to me,” says Nolan. “The primary parts are wood, metal and
glass. No batteries or beeps, just the quiet whisper of a mechanical
shutter.” Nolan's work is primarily focused on South Florida, the
Everglades, and Big Cypress National Preserve, and is largely motivated by
ecological concerns. Nolan hopes that, through his work, people will gain a
greater appreciation for the natural landscape. His prints can be found in
collections including the Law Firm of Becker & Poliakoff, the Six Mile
Cypress Center, the Old Davie School Museum and in many private collections
throughout Florida.

Chef Allen
and Sushi Maki offerings have proven very popular with passengers and have
contributed to a 7.6% increase in overall purchases. An additional
newsstand also played a part in this positive growth. This increase is from
January through November 2010 compared to the same period in 2009.
Chef Allen
opened a beautifully designed Burger Bar in Terminal 4. Located on the
upper (departure) level before the TSA security checkpoint leading to
Concourse H, the Burger Bar offers a variety of gourmet burgers, adult
shakes, and healthy options including both turkey and tuna burgers. Terminals
1, 2, and 3 also have new Chef Allen’s delectable gourmet salads and
sandwiches. Passengers in Terminals 2 and 3 found that Sushi Maki offers
freshly prepared sushi and Japanese salads, as well as Asian snacks and
treats.
Passengers
enjoy the newly renovated CNBC News & Gift store in Terminal 4 a great
place for magazines, newspapers, books, and convenience items. They also
introduced a wide variety of healthy and natural snacks to their product
line.
Comprising
overall purchases are three components, food, retail, and duty free. All
three areas increased last year with food up 9%, retail 5.25%, and duty
free purchases soaring with a 30.5% increase.

The Chef
Allen Burger Bar in Terminal 4 will offer delectable product samples from
noon to 2 p.m. on Friday, January 28. Please come by, check out the newly

The Early
Action Voluntary Residential Sound Insulation Pilot Program will provide
sound insulation to the 48 previously selected residential units located in
Dania Beach, close to the airport. Over the past several months, Program
Administrators performed the following:

Sent letters to the homeowners in the 70 DNL inviting them to
participate in the program
·
Held a public meeting to discuss the program and answer
questions
·
Reviewed applications submitted by interested homeowners
·
Selected 32 homeowners with 48 units
·
Assessed each home, determined the needed improvements, and
prepared bid documents
·
Went out to bid to solicit quotes from interested noise
abatement contractors
·
Broward County selected Northeast Noise Abatement Corporation
as the contractor
What’s
Next
In February,
the contractor, the acoustical window manufacturer, and the door
manufacturer will visit each of the 48 homes to conduct final measurements
of the windows and doors scheduled for replacement. These manufacturers
will custom build each window and door to fit the precise measurements of
the opening for maximum sound insulation. Installation of the acoustical
windows, doors, and other sound insulation measures will begin in May 2011.
The construction is anticipated to be completed by July 2011.
