 Fort
Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) is one of the safest and
most respected airports in the country. Once again, FLL was presented with
the Airport Safety Mark of Distinction Award by the Federal Aviation Administration
(FAA) Southern Region.
The FAA recognized our efforts in
Wildlife Hazard Management, as well as the audit system developed to ensure
corrective measures. This year, the FAA made a point to recognize our
ongoing compliance with National Safety.
Congratulations to the Staff at
Broward County Aviation Department for creating a safe environment for our
passengers.
 The
Broward County Cultural Division’s Public Art and Design Program is presenting Kinetic
Energy, an exhibition by
artist Michele Guarino, at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. The
exhibition in the Lee Wagener Art
Gallery, located at Terminal 2, Departure Level, will run for four
months beginning September 14, 2009.
The Lee Wagener Art Gallery offers
Broward County artists an opportunity to exhibit their work in a prominent,
high-traffic area in Terminal 2 that is accessible to the general public.
Artists are selected through the Public Art and Design Program and exhibits
are changed every four months. The far end of the gallery has been reserved
for the exhibition of video artworks from Broward County’s permanent art
collection. At present, Tree-Rain, by Broward-based artists Suzanne Scherer and Pavel Ouporov, has
been installed as the permanent video artwork.

 The Broward
County Aviation Department has recently deployed dozens of new power
outlets for passengers to use while waiting for their flights.
The outlets or charging stations are conveniently located throughout
Terminals 1 and 4 with plans for Terminals 2 and 3 later this year. The
stations are for guests to charge their phones, laptops or other electronic
devices, free of charge.
Southwest Airlines has also recently added convenient
charging stations at their gates to offer their passengers even more
choices.
 The Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood
International Airport will conduct its disaster drill on Wednesday,
November 4, 2009, beginning at approximately 6:30 p.m. We are working with
dozens of our airport partners and emergency responders throughout Broward
County. We are required to conduct these drills as part of our 139
certification every three years. Our last drill was in March of 2008. We
like to conduct the drills more frequently than required by the FAA.
The
scenario involves hydraulic failure of an inbound Continental Airlines
flight from Houston. There are over
40 different agencies and approximately 150 volunteers that will be
participating. The crash scene will be near the intersection of runways
13/31 and 9R/27L.
Perimeter Road on the south side of the airport will be closed during the
drill between the Aviation Department offices and Gulfstream International
on the west side of the airport.
We
will activate our Emergency Operation Center (EOC) as well as the county’s
EOC and our family room for relatives of the victims.
  Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood
International Airport is in the process of replacing its old defibrillators
with 40 new 2nd Generation AED’s - HeartStart FRx.
The HeartStart
FRx, according to their manufacturer, is smaller and lighter than the
previous version and is designed to be easier to use. The Aviation
Department is investing in the new units to ensure passenger and employee
safety.
 Spirit Airlines recently announced it is further expanding its network
of ultra low fares throughout the country of Colombia as it becomes the
first airline to offer international service from Armenia. The airline will
begin non-stop service between Fort Lauderdale and Armenia, located in
Colombia’s renowned coffee triangle, on November 13, 2009. www.spiritair.com.
 Allegiant Air
announced non-stop service to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International
Airport from Grand Rapids Michigan (GRR). The new service will begin
November 13, 2009, with two flights per week with flights on Tuesday and
Friday aboard MD-80s.
 Midwest Airlines announced seasonal, non-stop,
daily service from Milwaukee (MKE) to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood
International Airport (FLL) to begin December 17, 2009 with a 76-seat
Embraer 170 aircraft. To promote this new service, Midwest Airlines is
offering fares starting at USD81 one-way on the MKE-FLL route.

 October 1,
2009 Vision Airlines began operating in Terminal 1, “C” Concourse. They
will offer regular scheduled service on Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday to
Gulfport (GPT).
 Locair, a fast growing Air Taxi
Airline based in Ft. Lauderdale, is pleased to announce new passenger &
cargo service from South Florida & Tampa Bay to the Out Islands of The
Bahamas. Locair will be linking Ft. Lauderdale to the islands of Abaco
and Long Island. Flights from Ft. Lauderdale to Long Island will be the
first nonstop, regular flights between Stella Maris, Long Island and the
United States. Locair flights will begin on November 18, 2009.

 On
Friday, November 6, 2009, there will be a grand opening event of the
world’s largest single-ship cruise terminal and soon-to-be home of Royal
Caribbean International’s Oasis of the Seas. Each year
approximately 1.17 million passengers will experience an Oasis
journey. The terminal will boast a breathtaking view of 3,000-square-foot
work of art that internationally renowned artist Michele Oka Doner created
to adorn the center of the spectacular entrance hall. On December 5, the
Oasis of the Sea’s will begin its regular schedule and visit ports Charlotte
Amalie, St. Thomas; Philipsburg, St. Maarten; and Nassau, Bahamas.
 Delaware
North recently received the International Organization for  Standardization
(ISO) registration for its environmental management system at Ft.
Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. They are believed to be the
first airport concessionaire to receive this recognition.
ISO 14001 is an internationally
recognized set of standards for environmental management and many other
systems. ISOs 14001 environmental standards are designed to help
organizations comply with related laws, regulations and requirements, and
also to minimize how their operations impact the environment.
Delaware North began its pursuit of ISO
registration at FLL last year when it implemented GreenPath®, the company’s
proprietary environmental management system. Since its implementation, Greenpath® has
helped Delaware North reduce electricity usage, replace inefficient light
bulbs with energy-saving light bulbs, reduce water usage and ask vendors to
offer products with green value. Most notably, Delaware North initiated a
paper, plastic and glass recycling program in its facilities that reduced
the waste sent to area landfills by 350 tons since August 2008.
