Tree Trimmer Program Wins Award
Broward
County’s Tree Trimmer Program received an Outstanding Public
Educational Program award from the Florida Urban Forestry Council.
The Tree Trimmer Program was developed by Parks and Recreation
Division’s Extension Education section to inform, teach and motivate
the public on the importance of trees and the value of urban
forestry activities within their communities. The County Commission
passed an ordinance in October 2000 regulating the county’s
tree-trimming industry and required individuals and businesses that
trim trees for hire to obtain a license and provide proof of
certified training. To date, nearly 5,100 tree trimmers have been
trained in the proper pruning of trees for clearance, wind
tolerance and canopy restoration using best practices to maximize
tree longevity and workplace safety.

Two van loads of dog and cat food, treats and
cat litter, totaling 1,681 pounds, have been delivered to Animal
Care’s Fort Lauderdale adoption center. The donated items were
collected during the "Snack Shack" donation drive, which ran from
July 19 through August 31. “We are touched by the generosity that
has been shown by County employees and residents in helping our
community's homeless dogs and cats," said Armando Linares,
director, Permitting, Licensing and Consumer Protection Division.
Broward County’s two shelters provide care and seek adoptive
families for more than 20,000 homeless animals each year. For more

County Transit Receives $8 Million Grant for Broward Boulevard
Corridor
Broward County Transit (BCT)has received more
than $8 million from the Federal Transit Administration's Bus and
Bus Livability Initiative Grant Program. BCT will apply the grant
toward enhancements along the Broward Boulevard corridor, between
the Broward Central Terminal in Fort Lauderdale and the West
Regional Terminal in Plantation. The goal is to improve transit
travel time along the corridor, reduce reliance on automobiles and
reduce emissions and improve air quality by increasing public
transportation use. The grant program is part of a nearly $300
million investment of the Obama administration's livability
initiative to better coordinate transportation, housing and
commercial development for residents and their communities.
AARLCC’s
Summer Youth Program Success
During the summer break, 13 summer youth
workers joined the African-American Research Library and Cultural
Center for eight weeks through a program sponsored by WorkForce One.
They brought enthusiasm and intelligence to the task. Some of them
made “significant” achievements—transcribing two oral history
recordings of pioneer African-Americans made by the Trailblazers of
Broward County. These transcripts will allow scholars to easily
access this resource. Other youth were resourceful in making an
inventory of the complete public service collection. They helped to
weed out dated library materials and assisted customers with public
computer needs. Before heading back to school, Ann Williams,
AARLCC’s coordinator for the summer youth, worked with AARLCC staff
to organize a pizza party celebration, and rewarded the group with
school supplies in appreciation for their eight weeks of outstanding
service.
