Tree Trimmer Program Wins Award

Broward County treesBroward County’s Tree Trimmer Program received an Outstanding Public Educational Program award from the Florida Urban Forestry Council. The Tree Trimmer Program was developed by Parks and Recreation Division’s Extension Education section to inform, teach and motivate the public on the importance of trees and the value of urban forestry activities within their communities. The County Commission passed an ordinance in October 2000 regulating the county’s tree-trimming industry and required individuals and businesses that trim trees for hire to obtain a license and provide proof of certified training. To date, nearly 5,100 tree trimmers have been trained in the proper pruning of trees for clearance, wind tolerance and canopy restoration using best practices to maximize tree longevity and workplace safety.

AARLCC’s Summer Youth Program Success

Summer youth program

During the summer break, 13 summer youth workers joined the African-American Research Library and Cultural Center for eight weeks through a program sponsored by WorkForce One. They brought enthusiasm and intelligence to the task. Some of them made “significant” achievements—transcribing two oral history recordings of pioneer African-Americans made by the Trailblazers of Broward County. These transcripts will allow scholars to easily access this resource. Other youth were resourceful in making an inventory of the complete public service collection. They helped to weed out dated library materials and assisted customers with public computer needs. Before heading back to school, Ann Williams, AARLCC’s coordinator for the summer youth, worked with AARLCC staff to organize a pizza party celebration, and rewarded the group with school supplies in appreciation for their eight weeks of outstanding service.

New River Greenway

The first phase of the New River Greenway, which was handed over to Broward County by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) in August, is complete. The New River Greenway parallels I-595 on the north from 136th Avenue to University Drive in Plantation.

Broward County will now work to improve the Greenway by installing benches, shelter and landscaping so residents can walk, bicycle, jog, recreate and simply enjoy the Greenway. The County also has plans to further expand the Greenway west to Markham Park.

Broward County’s greenway system is a planned countywide network of safe and clean bicycle, pedestrian paths, nature trails and waterways. The greenways are popular among residents and provide a venue for alternative modes of transportation and opportunities for recreation, restore native plants and wildlife habitats, and improve neighborhoods and quality of life.

Greenways

In 2002, the Broward County Board of County Commissioners approved the Greenways Master Plan and individual plans for priority corridors. The New River Greenway is the first to be constructed and was originally part of a $5.9 million grant provided by the Florida Department of Transportation to Broward County. However, when plans to build the I-595 Express Corridor got underway, the location of the planned Greenway was modified, and then completed by FDOT.

At a ribbon cutting ceremony on August 18, FDOT officially turned over the New River Greenway to Broward County. An additional segment of the Greenway from east of Davie Road to State Road 84/Marina Mile is under construction. For more information on Broward Greenways, visit www.broward.org/greenways.
